Jonathan Milkovich, the veteran who founded Operation WarriorFit, is about to put his own mission to the test in the most literal way possible: on foot, for 700 miles, across the entire state of North Carolina. The effort, dubbed Operation Carolina, was covered by the Robesonian, which reported that Milkovich will start at North Carolina's far western border on September 21 and follow U.S. Highway 64 and connecting roads eastward, finishing near Cape Hatteras on October 7.
A run built on a real turning point
According to the Robesonian, Milkovich served for several years and struggled with his mental health after leaving the service - a story that will sound familiar to a lot of veterans reading this. The idea for Operation WarriorFit didn't come from a business plan; it came from a start line. At the Phoenix Marathon, Milkovich brought a group of fellow veterans to run alongside him, and watching what that shared effort did for everyone involved became the spark for the organization OWF is today.
Why 700 miles, not 5
Operation Carolina isn't a race - it's a slow, deliberate journey with a purpose. Along the route, Milkovich plans to stop in towns to meet local veterans and talk with the people he passes, turning a solo endurance effort into a rolling conversation about service, struggle, and recovery. It's a fitting extension of what Operation WarriorFit already does every day: covering race entry fees so veterans, service members, and first responders have a reason to lace up, set a goal, and find community around it.
That community is intentionally broad. OWF - and by extension, Operation Carolina - welcomes not just military veterans and active-duty service members, but former nurses, EMTs, police officers, firefighters, and other public servants who've given years of their lives in service to others.
Following along
For North Carolina veterans who want to meet Milkovich along the route, or anyone who wants to track Operation Carolina as it moves from the mountains to the coast this fall, keep an eye on Operation WarriorFit's North Carolina race listings and our channels for stop announcements as September approaches.
Operation Carolina is, in many ways, the founder's story and OWF's mission compressed into a single 700-mile line on a map. If you're a veteran, service member, or first responder in North Carolina or anywhere else looking for your own starting line, see if you're eligible for a free race entry - you don't have to run 700 miles to get started.
