How Does VA Math Work?

The VA uses a specific formula called VA Math (or combined ratings math) that differs from simple addition. Instead of adding percentages together, each disability rating is applied to the remaining "healthy" or non-disabled percentage of your body.

Example: 50% + 30% Disability

  1. Step 1: Start with 100% healthy
  2. Step 2: Apply 50% disability → 100% - 50% = 50% remaining healthy
  3. Step 3: Apply 30% to remaining → 50% × 30% = 15%
  4. Step 4: Combined = 50% + 15% = 65%
  5. Step 5: Round to nearest 10% = 70%

Note: Simple addition would give 80%, but VA Math gives 70%.

Key Points About VA Combined Ratings:

  • •Ratings are always applied from highest to lowest
  • •The final percentage is rounded to the nearest 10% (0.5 or higher rounds up)
  • •You can never exceed 100% combined rating
  • •Bilateral factor (for paired body parts) may increase your rating slightly

Frequently Asked Questions

What is VA disability compensation?

â–¼
VA disability compensation is a tax-free monthly payment to veterans who got sick or injured while serving in the military. The amount depends on your disability rating (0% to 100%) and number of dependents.

How is the VA combined rating calculated?

â–¼
The VA uses a formula called 'VA Math' where each disability is applied to your remaining healthy percentage, not simply added together. The final number is then rounded to the nearest 10%.

Why don't my disability ratings add up to what I expected?

â–¼
VA math applies each rating to the remaining non-disabled portion of your body, not the whole. This means two 50% ratings equal 75% (not 100%), because the second 50% only applies to the remaining 50%.

When do dependents affect my VA disability pay?

â–¼
Dependents only affect your compensation if you have a combined rating of 30% or higher. Below 30%, you receive the same amount regardless of dependents.

How often are VA disability rates updated?

â–¼
VA disability compensation rates are adjusted annually based on the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA). New rates typically take effect December 1st each year.

Can I receive 100% VA disability?

â–¼
Yes, you can receive a 100% disability rating through combined ratings that round to 100%, a single 100% rating, or Total Disability Individual Unemployability (TDIU) if you can't work due to service-connected disabilities.
