Central New York's firefighters, police officers, EMTs, and 911 dispatchers are getting an obstacle race built specifically around the work they do. The first-ever Strength to Serve Challenge takes place Sunday, September 13, 2026, at Green Lakes State Park in Fayetteville, and it was designed from the ground up by someone who has lived the job.
A Course Built From the Job
The three-mile course features 30 obstacles inspired directly by first-responder tasks: hose hauls, victim drags, CPR stations, extrication-tool carries, sandbag hauls, mazes, balance beams, and memory tests, according to FireRescue1. It's the kind of course that turns everyday training drills into a public event, giving civilians a taste of what a shift can actually demand physically and mentally.
The race was created by Brian Fontaine, a retired volunteer firefighter and EMT from Manlius who spent 25 years responding to emergencies before deciding to channel that experience into a community fitness challenge, per Lite 987.
Room for Every Fitness Level
What stands out about the Strength to Serve Challenge is its accessibility. Organizers built the obstacles to be scalable rather than punishing: anyone who can't complete a given challenge can instead knock out pushups or burpees in a designated penalty box and keep moving. The event is open to participants age 12 and up, and all fitness levels are welcome, a deliberate choice that keeps the focus on participation and appreciation for first responders rather than elite competition.
That kind of format matters for a community that includes career and volunteer responders juggling shift work with training time, along with the family members and neighbors who want to show up and understand what the job involves.
Giving Back While Testing Grit
Proceeds from the race benefit The Joyful Giving Project, adding a charitable component to an event already built around honoring first responders. It's a small but growing example of the kind of grassroots race concept that resonates with the endurance and obstacle-racing community: mission-driven courses that tell a story with every obstacle.
Operation WarriorFit already partners with dozens of races across New York and beyond, from 5Ks to Spartan-style events, so first responders and veterans in Central New York have plenty of company on race day. You can browse the full lineup of New York races or see every partnered race nationwide.
For the veterans, service members, and first responders who make up the OWF community, events like the Strength to Serve Challenge are exactly the kind of race worth training for.
